80% less dust with Rocky DEM

Montanuniversität Leoben bidirectionally coupled DEM–CFD simulation to reduce dust emission in conveyor technology

A difficult challenge in the bulk-cargo-handling sector is reducing dust formation, an objective designed to protect both workers and the environment. With this in mind, a research project at the Montanuniversität Leoben is investigating bulk material behavior in a wide variety of cargo handling plants using Rocky DEM and ANSYS® Fluent® simulation packages along with support from CADFEM.

Rocky DEM enables high performance computing (HPC) calculation on a graphics processing unit (GPU) basis, while CFD simulation enables central processing unit (CPU) usage — drastically reducing the compute time required to explore design variables, optimize performance, and meet design deadlines.

The team reduced dust emission in the experiment by more than 80 percent.
