Rocky DEM is a powerful, 3D Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) program that quickly and accurately simulates the granular flow behavior of different shaped and sized particles within a conveyor chute, mill, or other materials handling equipment.

Several capabilities set Rocky DEM apart from other DEM codes, including its Multi-GPU processing capabilities, truly non-round particle shapes, the ability to simulate particle breakage without loss of mass or volume, the visualization of boundary surface reduction due to wear, and more.

Mining and manufacturing organizations all over the world are choosing Rocky DEM software to evaluate their bulk material handling systems because Rocky DEM simulates granular flow quickly, accurately, and with more similarity to real-world conditions than ever before. With its ability to create realistic shapes that settle and compact just like actual particles, and its variable sticky and dust-like conditions, Rocky DEM can replicate nearly any type of material handling environment imaginable.

The streamlined calculations and Multi-GPU processing capabilities included within Rocky DEM produce faster and more accurate results when compared to other DEM products. And Rocky DEM can simulate more than tens of millions of particles in nearly limitless size and shape distributions from rocks to grain, metal to plastic, and beyond.

Rocky DEM uses truly non-spherical particle models that behave like real-world particles, which produces more realistic results.
Breakage simulations

Rocky DEM simulates breakage by calculating the fracture of each particle based upon the energy generated from impact or friction.

Rocky DEM's unique ability of utilizing one or more GPU cards on the same motherboard greatly speeds up the computational time, and also allows for large-scale simulations involving tens of millions of particles.

Rocky DEM is a software package that can be tailored to the unique needs of your company. The team of developers at ESSS is empowered to adapt the program code to meet the requests of each client as desired.

The coupled DEM-CFD approach is a promising alternative for modeling granular-fluid systems, enlarging the range of equipments and processes that can be studied with numerical simulations. Complex phenomena such as pneumatic conveying, granular drying and/or sorting, slurry mills and fluidized beds can be simulated and analyzed with this coupled approach.

Rocky includes both one-way and two-way coupling abilities with ANSYS Fluent. Moreover, Rocky's coupling approach takes into account particle shape when computing momentum and heat exchange between fluid (N fluid phases) and particles, providing physically consistent and accurate results.

In addition, Rocky's GPU and Multi-GPU processing combined with Fluent's CPU parallelization capabilities ensures that there are no resource competition between the two tools, which allows for bigger, more complex cases to be solved.
