Digital twin in the mining industry: a grinding mill case study

Mining industry companies often implement numerical simulation and digital twin (DT) technology to achieve higher equipment efficiency and to gain comprehensive information about processes inside a mill.

In this webinar, presenters describes advanced approaches that use coupled multiple DEM simulations (Discrete Element Method), IIoT, and predictive analytics.

Simulation-driven digital twin concepts and algorithms are illustrated using a CADFEM CIS small-scale demo-mill facility that was created to demonstrate digital twin system architecture and user interface using different scenarios of mill operation.

Agenda:

  • Operation-based simulations and lifecycle management
  • Multiple Rocky simulations for offline efficiency improvement
  • Simulation-based digital twin concepts and algorithms
  • Conversion of Rocky data to a meta-model
  • A look at the CADFEM CIS small-scale demo-mill facility
  • Illustration of DT work using a scenario
  • Results & discussion

Presented by:

Andrey Feoktistov, Ph.D

Rocky DEM business development manager, CADFEM CIS

In 2006, Andrey graduated from the Saint Petersburg State Mining Institute. In 2009, he defended his PhD thesis, which addressed the metallurgy of ferrous, non-ferrous, and rare metals. Since 2009, he has worked as an assistant lecturer at the Mining University Department of technological processes and production automation. He worked as an engineer and research associate at Mekhanobr-Tekhnika company, which produces equipment for mineral and technogenic raw material processing. Andrey became Laureate of the All-Russian Young Scientists Competition, earning the “Engineer of the Year 2010” award. Since 2008, he has been engaged in DEM, application of three-dimensional computer-aided design technologies, and numerical modeling of equipment and processes in mining, metallurgical and oil & gas industries. Since 2015, he has been working at CADFEM CIS JSC as a lead specialist, and since 2016 as a Rocky DEM business development manager. Andrey focuses on applying numerical modeling of bulk media to improve equipment design and processes efficiency.
